A New Program for Korean Artists

Yellow Chair Salon and Thomas Park Gallery are coming together to create a new program for Korean artists looking to expand their practices and connect with the New York art world.
The idea is simple: to create a space for cross-pollination between artists in Korea and the people, ideas, and conversations shaping contemporary art in New York.
Rather than a traditional class, the program offers Korean artists an opportunity to enter into an ongoing dialogue with Yellow Chair Salon’s community of artists, curators, writers, gallerists, and educators in New York City. Through conversations, critique, mentorship, studio visits, and other encounters, artists will be introduced to different ways of thinking about their work and new possibilities for where it can go.
Thomas Park Gallery has long fostered an international dialogue through its exhibition program in Seoul, bringing together artists and perspectives from Korea and abroad. This collaboration with Yellow Chair Salon extends that exchange to New York, creating new connections between Korean artists and the broader New York art ecosystem.
Yellow Chair Salon was founded on the belief that meaningful artistic growth happens in community. Over the years, its programs have brought together artists and cultural practitioners from across the United States, Europe, and beyond. Together with Thomas Park Gallery, the program creates a direct point of connection between these communities.
The program is intended to be both practical and expansive: a chance to receive thoughtful feedback on your work, meet people working across the New York art world, gain a deeper understanding of how different parts of that ecosystem operate, and develop relationships that can continue beyond the program itself.
At its center is the idea of exchange. Korean artists bring their own practices, perspectives, and contexts into the conversation, while Yellow Chair Salon opens the door to a new network of artists and cultural practitioners in New York.

Yellow Chair Salon과 Thomas Park Gallery가 한국 작가들의 작업을 확장하고 뉴욕 미술계와의 실질적인 연결을 만들어가기 위한 새로운 프로그램을 시작합니다.
이 프로그램은 단순한 미술 수업이나 단기 연수가 아닙니다. 한국의 작가들이 뉴욕에서 활동하는 작가, 큐레이터, 비평가, 갤러리스트, 교육자들과 직접 만나 자신의 작업에 대해 이야기하고, 크리틱과 멘토링, 스튜디오 방문 등 다양한 경험을 통해 작업의 새로운 방향과 가능성을 탐색하는 프로그램입니다.
프로그램의 핵심은 교류입니다. 참여 작가들은 Yellow Chair Salon을 중심으로 형성된 뉴욕의 예술 커뮤니티와 지속적인 대화를 나누며 자신의 작업을 다른 시각에서 바라볼 기회를 갖습니다. 동시에 뉴욕 미술계의 다양한 사람들이 어떻게 작업하고, 전시를 만들고, 서로 연결되는지를 경험하며 그 생태계에 대한 실질적인 이해를 넓혀갑니다.
Thomas Park Gallery는 2013년부터 지금까지 서울과 뉴욕에서 전시 프로그램을 통해 한국과 미국의 예술가들의 다양한 미술적 관점을 연결해왔습니다. Yellow Chair Salon과의 이번 협업은 이러한 국제적 교류를 보다 심층적으로 발전시키고, 서울과 뉴욕 미술계 사이에 보다 긴밀하고 발전적인 접점을 만들고자 합니다.
Yellow Chair Salon은 예술가의 의미 있는 성장은 커뮤니티 안에서 이루어진다는 믿음에서 시작되었습니다. 그동안 미국과 유럽을 비롯한 여러 지역의 작가와 문화예술인들이 Yellow Chair의 프로그램을 통해 만나고 교류해왔습니다. 이번 협업을 통해 한국의 작가들도 이 커뮤니티에 참여하고 새로운 관계를 만들어갈 수 있습니다.
참여 작가들은 자신의 작업에 대한 깊이 있는 피드백을 받고, 뉴욕의 다양한 예술가와 전문가를 만나며, 각자의 필요에 따라 작업과 커리어의 다음 단계를 모색하게 됩니다. 프로그램을 통해 만들어진 관계와 대화가 프로그램이 끝난 이후에도 지속될 수 있도록 하는 것 역시 중요한 목표입니다.

YCS PROGRAMS
The Independent Study Program is Yellow Chair’s most open, flexible, and artist-driven offering. Building on the foundation of Salon, Symposia!, and our residency programs, ISP is designed for artists ready for something that moves beyond the structure of a traditional program and into a more personalized ecosystem of support. The ISP adapts to the artist—not the other way around.
There is no fixed track, no single expected outcome, and no assumptions about how your practice should evolve. Instead, the program is shaped piece by piece around your work, your curiosities, and the life you’re building in and beyond the studio. Whether you’re seeking sustained critique, focused research, professional development, or exhibition preparation, the ISP creates space for a process that reflects your goals.
Each artist works closely with a lead mentor and a carefully assembled advisory circle—artists, writers, curators, and gallerists selected to align with your needs. Together, you build a rhythm and structure that feels right for your practice. That may mean monthly studio visits, concentrated periods of independent work, intensive one-on-one conversations, or long-term project development. Some artists lean heavily into critique; others focus on writing, research, or expanding professional opportunities. The ISP makes space for all of it.
The program also includes optional master classes and residency opportunities in Brooklyn and Tivoli, New York, offering concentrated studio time, hands-on guidance, and moments of reset or creative acceleration. These can take place at any point in the program—or not at all—depending entirely on what best serves the artist.
일대일 스터디 프로그램 Independent Study Program(ISP)은 개별 작가의 작업과 필요에 맞추어 설계되는 Yellow Chair의 가장 유연하고 개인화된 프로그램입니다.
정해진 커리큘럼이나 하나의 목표를 따르는 대신, 작가가 프로그램에 맞추는 것이 아니라 프로그램이 작가에게 맞춰집니다. 현재 어떤 작업을 하고 있는지, 무엇을 고민하고 있는지, 앞으로 어떤 방향으로 발전하고 싶은지를 바탕으로 각자의 프로그램을 구성합니다.
지속적인 크리틱이 필요한 작가는 크리틱에 집중할 수 있고, 특정 주제에 대한 리서치나 글쓰기, 장기 프로젝트 개발, 전시 준비 또는 전문적인 커리어 개발에 집중할 수도 있습니다.
각 작가는 메인 멘토와 긴밀하게 작업하며, 필요에 따라 작가, 비평가, 큐레이터, 갤러리스트 등으로 구성된 자문 그룹이 함께합니다. 이들은 각 작가의 작업과 목표에 맞추어 선정됩니다.
프로그램의 방식 역시 유연합니다. 정기적인 스튜디오 방문, 일대일 미팅, 집중적인 개인 작업, 리서치 또는 장기 프로젝트 개발 등 작가에게 가장 효과적인 방식으로 진행됩니다.
선택에 따라 마스터 클래스와 뉴욕 브루클린 및 티볼리에서의 레지던시에도 참여할 수 있습니다. 레지던시는 집중적인 작업 시간과 멘토링을 통해 작업을 재정비하거나 새로운 단계로 발전시킬 수 있는 기회를 제공합니다. 참여 시점과 여부 역시 작가의 필요에 따라 결정됩니다.

PODS is the newest addition to Yellow Chair’s Independent Study ecosystem, designed for artists seeking a highly focused and intimate framework for dialogue, critique, and mentorship. Building on the foundation of Salon, Symposia!, and our residency programs, PODS creates curated groups of three artists who meet regularly in close conversation—offering a deeper level of accountability, exchange, and shared growth.
At the center of PODS is sustained critical engagement. Artists present work in progress for feedback from both mentors and peers, creating an ongoing rhythm of reflection, challenge, and development. Alongside these collective sessions, each artist receives dedicated one-on-one meetings with the core mentors of their POD, allowing for individualized guidance tailored to the needs of their evolving practice.
PODS also extends beyond regular meetings through surprise guest visits, studio visits, mentor-led lectures, and curated trips—creating opportunities for expanded dialogue, connection, and professional insight.
PODS는 세 명의 작가가 하나의 소규모 그룹을 이루어 정기적으로 작업을 공유하고 크리틱과 멘토링을 받는 프로그램입니다.
ISP가 한 작가의 개별적인 필요에 맞춘 프로그램이라면, PODS는 작은 그룹 안에서 지속적으로 작업을 보여주고 대화하며 함께 성장하는 과정에 초점을 맞춥니다.
PODS의 중심에는 지속적이고 깊이 있는 크리틱이 있습니다. 참여 작가들은 진행 중인 작업을 정기적으로 공유하고 멘토와 동료 작가들의 피드백을 받습니다. 한 번의 평가로 끝나는 것이 아니라, 작업이 변화하는 과정을 함께 지켜보며 질문하고 다시 작업하는 과정이 반복됩니다.
그룹 크리틱과 함께 각 작가는 POD의 핵심 멘토와 일대일 미팅을 갖습니다. 이를 통해 그룹 안에서 이루어지는 대화와는 별도로, 자신의 작업과 고민에 맞춘 보다 구체적인 조언과 멘토링을 받을 수 있습니다.
PODS는 정기적인 크리틱에만 머물지 않습니다. 게스트 작가와 전문가와의 만남, 스튜디오 방문, 멘토의 강의, 큐레이션된 아트 투어 등을 통해 뉴욕 미술계의 다양한 사람과 공간을 직접 경험할 기회를 제공합니다.
세 명의 작가가 서로의 작업을 지속적으로 보고 질문하며, 멘토와 함께 각자의 작업을 한 단계 더 발전시켜가는 집중적인 소규모 프로그램입니다.
The Yellow Chair Salon is pleased to announce a new collaboration with Art Cake, expanding its ISP and Master Class programs through dedicated studio space within Art Cake and creating new opportunities for artistic production, research, and dialogue.
With dedicated studio space for artists, the initiative offers an environment to experiment, create, and advance new work while embedding that practice within a framework of mentorship, critique, and sustained exchange. Conceived as both working studios and a platform for critical engagement, the space supports artistic inquiry alongside public programming, connecting independent creative practice with collective conversation.
Through residencies, studio access, critiques, visiting artists, exhibitions, and public programs, The Yellow Chair Salon will continue to develop opportunities for artistic growth and interdisciplinary exchange. Artists are supported not only through space and resources, but through ongoing dialogue with peers, mentors, and the broader public.
This initiative builds upon Art Cake’s longstanding commitment to providing below-market-rate studio space for artists. By operating its educational and curatorial programs from dedicated studio space within Art Cake, The Yellow Chair Salon will be able to expand its offerings while contributing to the creative energy of the broader Art Cake community. Art Cake and The Yellow Chair Salon share a commitment to supporting artists through studio practice, education, and critical engagement.

Yellow Chair Salon은 레지던시, 스튜디오 이용, 크리틱, 초청 작가와의 만남, 전시 및 퍼블릭 프로그램 등을 통해 작가의 성장과 다양한 분야 간의 교류를 위한 기회를 지속적으로 만들어 갈 예정입니다. 참여 작가들은 작업 공간과 실질적인 지원뿐 아니라 동료 작가와 멘토, 그리고 보다 넓은 관객과 지속적으로 대화하고 교류할 수 있습니다.
이번 협업은 작가들에게 시세보다 낮은 비용으로 스튜디오 공간을 제공해 온 Art Cake의 오랜 지원 활동을 기반으로 합니다. Yellow Chair Salon은 Art Cake 내 전용 공간을 거점으로 교육 및 큐레토리얼 프로그램을 운영함으로써 프로그램의 범위를 더욱 확장하고, 동시에 Art Cake 커뮤니티의 창작 활동과 교류에도 기여하고자 합니다.
